The imperial heron is not a bird very known in our environment, principally because its distribution is very scanty in The Basque Country.

It is a migratory bird that is fed on small vertebrates.
It needs zones of marsh like Txipio and estuary of Plentzia.

They are indispensable to its survive.

Palaeolithic site in Barrica

Apart from for its beauty and suitability for the practice of surf, beach of Barrika is notable for the Palaeolithic deposit which has been found in its surrounding areas.

This is located in the Kurtzio mountain and it has an antiquity of 80.000 years, which turns it into the only case into the whole Cantabrian cornice.

This deposit fits with a outdoor workshop of silex without a specific location and knifes and scrapers have been found.

Every year the department of education of the Basque Government invests a lot of money in subsidizing importantly projects of environmental education in the schools: sensitization about the problems which appear today in day the nature, knowledge of the solutions, promotion of respectful attitudes...

While I was in festivity of Lemoniz (Basque Country) I thought what a big damage is produced against these goals when animals are used in shows for young people (look at attached images or download the video).

No animals in popular festivities!

Azkorriaga's fortification was getting up in Ustrikoetxe cape. This fort was raised in the century XVIII to protect the bay in an epoch with frequent fights against the English people.

Today, only the ruins of this construction can be visited: a rectangular space limited by the remains of a wall and one a small construction that was used like polvorín.

Without any doubt, a place of enormous beauty which maybe is asking for more attention (explanatory cartels, etc ...).

Oil pollution

Interesting post Oil Pollution published in Blogathon which warns us that the accidents of oil tankers are not, not with much, the principal reason of pollution for hydrocarbons (oils, petrol, galipote, etc.) in the oceans.

The attached table explains the principal reasons of pollution which are 95 % of spilt total.

It seems to be evident that the use of the oil and its derivatives that we do in land has more influence that spilt from disaster of ships.

Nevertheless we must not forget that in spite of the fact that the spilt for collapse of ships supposes a small percentage, the ecological damage which is generated is much more devastating to local level and and permanently for many years in the zone in the one that they produce.

Anyway, Do you know that the residues and spilt of oil derivatives of a city of 5 million persons in one year it is equivalent to the whole of a great oil well?

Fuel pollution

On November 13, 2003 there was sinking opposite to the coasts of Galicia the oil tanker Prestige.

The spilt one of fuel caused by the shipwreck provoked an enormous black pollution area which has been affecting the whole Cantabrian coast.

Almost three years have passed but, thousands of miles from the point in which the ship disappeared, remains of the tragedy can still be found

These photos are a witness. In stony area of Azkorri, near the cape of Villano, on coast of Gorliz, abundant spots of fuel are found.

Who said that they would clean it?

DUNES

In the bay of Gorliz and Plentzia are very two differentiated zones.

First of all we have the own beach that arises as a result of marine dynamics: erosion that the surge causes in the marine coast, transport by means of the currents of the eroded matter and sedimentation of this one at heart of the bay.

Nevertheless another peculiar zone exists, the dunes zone which which has been generated by the dynamics of the wind. This zone can be found from the opening of the stream of Txatxarro (near to the small hospital) to the end of Astondo and it enter around 400 meters towards the municipality of Gorliz.

Nowadays, however, the road of Plentzia-Gorliz, the great hospital in the middle of the seashore, the zone of parking and some villas cover this dunes zone. In addition the plantation to pines and the road to the hospital avoid the action of the wind stopping the movement of sandy grounds.

On the other hand in Astondo we can find dunes cemented. Rocks formed for 6000 years in a process of sedimentation and petrifaction of the sand. This is a point of special geologic interest that only has other two similar reports in all North of Spain.

You know that this solemn declaration was accepted by the UN and UNESCO and it recognized the principle of the equality of all the species with respect to the right life and the dignity of all the alive beings to being dealt with respect, without abuses nor gratuitous violence, don’t you?

You know that not only the use of animals for entertainment, but the spectacles and exhibitions were prohibited particularly if these shows are incompatibles with the dignity of the animal specifically , don’t you?

You know that was settled down the right of all the animals to live and to grow to the rate and the conditions of its species, don’t you?

Not maltreat the animals, nor in celebrations... Animals!

World series in Gorliz

In The Basque Country, all the subjects related to the environment are tie to the Basque Environment Strategy for the Sustainable Development.
This strategy is developed through the General Law of Protection of the Environment (3/1998 of 27 February), which is supposed to be able to assurance simultaneously a project of sustainable development for our community and better quality of life for all those that we lived here. According to this law, annually a series of environmental indicators are measured and one of these is the noise level which.
According to the last measures more than a 18% of the citizenship supports levels of acoustic contamination which are not normal levels.
This is the problem that the neighbours who live near to the sport centre have to experience because of the last fashion imposed in Gorliz: The races of motors and cars that in spite of being small, they turn out to be really annoying for people who come to relax or to simply enjoy this surrounding’s calm.

The tide-mill

It is very possible that already in the century XV or even before, in the surrounding areas of what is nowadays Plentzia's municipality, the marine flow and reflux were used with the purpose of moving wheels of mills.

Witness of this usage we had the mill of Gasteluondo placed in the entry to the town, to approximately 200 meters of the current gangplank. This mill was constructed in the century XVIII and it had the unusual characteristic of having five stones, opposite to the habitual two of other mills.

In spite of the fact that this mill was in relative good state (it stopped working only 50 years ago, being the last miller Félix Echeita Zugasti), the works of landfill for the building of the municipal pelota court or fronton, the reform of the road and the construction of the walk led to the destruction of this historical and cultural patrimony that will never be recovered.

Today only part of the original machinery and of the original functioning are exposed in a small zone enabled by the Town hall.

This kind of mills accumulated water in a deposit during the high-tide. Then, while the level of the sea was going down, they unloaded this water and this water movement was used to move the stone of the mill. In this manner the grain, which was introduced on the most top part, was turned into flour.

What a pity! isn't it?

It seems dangerous to be surrounded by sweepings while we consumed food, medicines, articles for personal hygiene, doesn’t it?
It seems sarcastic that a great commercial center can be surrounded by leftovers, sweepings, rest and wastes, doesn’t it?
